A Meaningful Life

livethelife-320x.jpgI have often wondered if I’m living a meaningful life, a life that matters. Matter in a sense that other people aside from my immediate family and friends would benefit from my existence. So, I would occasionally ask myself this question, “When I’ve crossed over the spirit world, would I be remembered and if so, how?

I have a selfish reason why I want to start my own school. I want to matter and I want to be remembered!

I’m not a sports stud, although when no one is looking I pretend to be. I’m also not an entertainment god, well sort off, in my bedroom, with my karaoke mike and my three year old as my audience. While I’m well versed in politics and in my mind I could run the country better than anyone, I’m far from being a good looking charismatic politician. However, the one thing that I have going is my ability to educate.

Through experience and love, I’ve learned how to be an effective teacher and a skillful administrator. Simply put, if it has something to do with a school, I can do it. Naturally, to live to the fullest extent of my potential, the next step for me is to own and run my own school.

Of course this endeavor will not be easy. It’s a huge responsibility. There’s a remote possibility that I can fail and all the blame will fall on my shoulders, no board, no local school councils, no superintendents to cushion the blow. But, this is just how I like it. It would be like playing in game 7 of the NBA Finals with 3 seconds left on the clock and my team is down by two points. I demanded to take the last shot and with everyone watching, I let the ball fly behind the three point line, and SWISHHHHH! Nothing but net!

Don’t we all want this, the ability and the chance to control our own destiny, our successes and failures? Just imagine. When I succeed , I will leave an institution of learning that my children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren can continue. When everything is said and done, the lives that will be touched by my school will be enumerable.

So this is what I’m going to do. This is how I’m going to be remembered. This is how I’m going to matter. And you know what, the best part of all this is that you get to be a part of the journey! So hop on and enjoy the ride!

I will give periodic updates  about my school project. Don’t miss a single entry of this exciting endeavor, subscribe now through e-mail or via RSS. If you want to be a part of this venture, read the following entry Be Immortalized For Only $10  and My Project.

You are doing a great service to this world in your work with children. I find much joy whenever I have the opportunity to work with kids. Feeling you’ve made a difference in the life of a child is one of the great privileges in the world. You will make many!

You know how I wrote in my post on “How to Be a Renaissance Man/Woman” that Goethe’s masterwork was “Faust” (his magnum opus)? Well it sounds to me like this school is your masterwork. And you’re not just talking about it, you’re acting.

  1. Bruno Said,

I wonder what I’ll leave behind, what kind of legacy???

I think I should start at your school when it’s up and running. I should visit your school and give a raw-raw, motivational speech about the dichotomy they will have created when they decide they want to stop learning –What the outcome could be versus what the outcome should always be, but only if they choose to remember that learning is the key. I could sign my name on the wall and really be remembered.

    :)

    Have an awesome weekend Chris!!!

“With this kind of support, who can fail, right?” - failure shouldn’t even be part of your vocabulary! Believe in yourself… I believe in you.

Hey Chris. In response to your comment on my site. I do like Spam. The food kind, obviously. I have not had it in years. But I used to eat tons of it at my Granny’s!!!

Continued luck with your project. Can’t wait to see it happen!

  1. Robin Said,

I think if we do things that make us feel genuinely fulfilled, those things happen to also be the things that most contribute to everyone else - so therefore it is not selfish to focus on becoming fulfilled ourselves - in fact it’s the only way to really contribute. On that sillyphophical note…

  1. Definitely no failure allowed. It’s never occurred to me that this won’t happen, Chris and you should see it the same way. Just a matter of time.

I’ve always loved this quote too.

  1. Natural Said,

Well I had planned on physical immortality, but I’ll settle with having my name on a wall. Now how far are you (school) from Valenzuella City (Pulacan). That’s where I’ll be visiting in a few years when my friend retires.

  1. @Kelly—You are absolutely right.

@Natural–Valenzuela City, Bulacan is about 10 hours by car, depending on traffic. By plane it will only take an hour.

  1. Dr. Cason Said,

Chris- Good luck! I have the same dream. I dream that I will leave this world a little better. Somehow I know that I have this training and I don’t want to just save for the latest iPod. I want to bring medicine to the people who need it the most.

    I’m running over and donating $10. :)
