13 Questions For America

happy-birthday-america.jpgphoto by Waller Library

Hey America, my land, my country, tomorrow is your birthday and like every American I will celebrate it with food and fireworks and I will sing God Bless America with my right hand on my left chest and I will get choked up and thank the God Almighty that I’ve celebrated another birthday with you. But before I get into the celebration mode, I would like to ask you 13 questions.

Of course I have more questions but I’m restricting it to 13 in honor of the 13 original colonies who helped celebrate your first birthday. So here it goes:

1. Do you know where your children rank as compare to other children from other countries when it comes to Math and Reading test scores?

2. What would be the major effects of Universal Health Care in America?

3. Where do you stand on environmental issues?

4. Is Gay Marriage a civil rights issue or a moral issue?

5. What is your monthly cost for the War In Iraq?

6. What is the right thing to do when it comes to the issue of Israel and Palestine?

7. How come all Public Schools are not created equal?

8. Would you still be a world leader without your military might?

9. What do you think about making English as the national language?

10. Can American Big Business compete in the global arena without outsourcing its labor force overseas?

11. Would you react the same way you are reacting now if the illegal immigrants are coming from Canada instead of Mexico?

12. Will you ever amend the constitution so that a foreign born citizen can be president?

13. Are you ready for a Black Commander-In-Chief?

I would really appreciate it if you can answer these before your birthday but if you can’t I understand. I know that you will be busy preparing for the celebration. Meanwhile, I too need to get going and get ready for your party.

Have fun and Happy Birthday!

  1. All very good questions. I’d love to know the answers as well. Be sure to post replies when you hear back, k? ;)

  1. Marelisa Said,

What a beautiful photograph, and great questions! How about: will you ever be ready for a woman Commander in Chief? I spent so many 4th of July’s watching the fireworks in Washington, DC. Now I’m kind of sad I’m going to miss them. Well, in the words of The Terminator, “I’ll be back.” Happy 4th of July, Chris!

What a great post and superb questions. It would be nice if we could get the answers, wouldn’t it.

Like you, I’ll be celebrating this holiday too. My favorite part is the fireworks.

Happy 4th of July to you and yours!

    Great questions.

I’m with Marelisa: “will you ever be ready for a woman Commander in Chief?”

  1. Chris ~

Yet another great post from you about our country. You could be a better journalist than those puppets on the TV bragging about their knowledge of politics and our country.

    Happy 4th of July

  1. Tara R. Said,

Awesome list of questions… I tried to answer these myself and found some of my answers lacking. Nicely Done! Happy Fourth of July!

  1. Interesting questions, most of which are applicable to Canada as well. Just some quick thoughts:

    1. Do you know where your children rank as compare to other children from other countries when it comes to Math and Reading test scores? - Ontario implemented a mandatory literacy test that must be passed before you can graduate high school. What I don’t know is if there is additional help provided to those children who do not pass. It would be quite typical of a government to implement a testing standard without the support required to help students pass.

    4. Is Gay Marriage a civil rights issue or a moral issue? - oh boy does this one ever get bounced around, but the definition of marriage was legally changed in Canada.

    5. What is your monthly cost for the War In Iraq? - dollars? or lives, and mental and physical health? the Urbane Lion works in Casualty Support. This has provided me a whole new perspective on the cost.

    9. What do you think about making English as the national language? - Really? Interesting. I wonder if that will be as contentious an issue as the English/French debate here in Canada. They are both official languages, but what that really means in a practical sense is still extremely grey.

    Happy July 4th!

  1. Kyddryn Said,

Your answers, sir ( Yes, I am America. So are you. So is every citizen, every denizen whether legal or not. We all make the nation.):

    1. If wealth and privilege were reflected in test scores, we would certainly be among the best. Sadly, money does not make the mind. We are not doing well, are we?

    2. Chaos, resentment, anger, and possibly healthier citizens.

    3. I prefer not to get all my minerals in one breath.

    4. As it stands, civil - when the state started mucking about with marriage and rights attached to it, they made it that way. If people are willing to forgo tax breaks and other civil “benefits” of a marriage contract, then they can deny equal rights to all. Meanwhile, if we are going to make laws regulating something, those laws must be equally applied. The law is not for sometimes, and not just for a few. Equality is an all-or-nothing proposition.

    5. How do you put a dollar sign on life?

    6. Honestly, I don’t know.

    7. Because all booster clubs are not created equal. Better schools will be built where the money is, because they are built by politicians, and they know which side their bread is buttered on.

    8. Probably not.

    9. I don’t know what good it would do, besides feed the linguistic tension we already have. People hold onto their identity, especially when it’s all they have left.

    10. Can the unions that have a stranglehold on labor learn to let go of their entitlements, privileges, and bloated self-importance??

    11. This is a nation of laws. Break the laws, suffer the consequences - it doesn’t really matter what direction you come from, you will go right back over the border if you can’t cross it legally.

    12. Perhaps one day, but we will have to tread carefully, or wind up with a President who is simply a puppet for some other nation.

    13. I am ready for a commander in chief who doesn’t turn their back on their culture, blood, or history. I am ready for someone who doesn’t feel the need to belittle, denigrate, or lie about their competition. I am ready for someone who will not seek to hide their little peccadilloes, and will answer honestly when asked about drugs, sex, morality. Someone who is not afraid of who they once were, because it shaped who they now are. I don’t care what color they are, or if they’re an innie or an outie - I just want a strong, honest, competent leader to help restore our freedoms and keep us safe within our boundaries. Is that too much to ask?

    Shade and Sweetwater,
    K (That’s Mizz America to you!) :-)
